On Sunday, Pope Francis made a heartfelt appearance at St. Peter’s Square, blessing a sea of tens of thousands of faithful who gathered for the Easter Mass. His frailty was evident as he addressed the crowd from a wheelchair, his voice notably weak and raspy, a consequence of a recent battle with life-threatening pneumonia.
As he raised his hand in greeting, a spontaneous cheer erupted from the audience, affirming his bond with the faithful. "Dear brothers and sisters, Happy Easter," he announced, before Archbishop Diego Ravelli, a Vatican aide, took the stage to deliver the traditional “Urbi et Orbi” address, a papal message to the city of Rome and the world that traditionally occurs during Easter and Christmas.

In a brief interaction, the pope met with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who was visiting Rome for the Easter weekend. Their meeting underscored the pope's continued engagement with global leaders, despite his health limitations.
Having been discharged from the hospital on March 23, doctors advised the pope to take it slow for a minimum of two months to recover fully. He had spent five weeks hospitalized, fighting pneumonia and other serious complications that nearly claimed his life. Despite medical advice to avoid crowds, his resolve to connect with his followers remained steadfast, illustrating the deep commitment he holds towards his papal duties.
