Russia-Ukraine War: Escalation of Air Assaults Amid Major Prisoner Exchange

Russia and Ukraine heightened their military confrontations over the weekend with significant air assaults that coincided with a large-scale prisoner exchange, emphasizing the deepening crisis and the challenges ahead for diplomacy.

In the early hours of Saturday, Russia and Ukraine engaged in aggressive drone warfare, launching hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles in a show of force that underscores the ongoing hostilities despite the simultaneous execution of the war's most substantial prisoner swap. Russia's assault on Ukraine involved the deployment of 250 long-range drones and 14 ballistic missiles, with Kyiv emerging as the primary target of the night.

According to the Ukrainian air force, the country successfully intercepted six missiles and nearly all incoming drones; however, the attacks still caused injuries to at least 15 civilians in Kyiv due to drone debris landing on apartment structures, igniting fires and causing chaos in the capital. The nighttime sky was illuminated with flashes from missiles and focused gunfire, leaving residents rattled and anxious, with President Volodymyr Zelensky condemning Moscow's actions as a deliberate extension of the war.

“It was a difficult night for all of Ukraine,” Zelensky stated, asserting that each attack diminishes the prospects for peace and highlighting Russia's consistent rejection of Ukraine's cease-fire propositions.

In a retaliatory move, Ukraine has ramped up its aerial strikes against Russian locations in recent weeks, including an attack this week involving hundreds of drones targeting Moscow, which forced several airports to temporarily suspend their operations.
