Ellen DeGeneres Reflects on UK Move and Life After Trump

Ellen DeGeneres shares insights on her relocation to the UK, citing political climate and personal growth.

Ellen DeGeneres, in her first public appearance since moving to the UK, opened up about her decision to settle there, attributing it to the political climate in the United States following Donald Trump's election. The beloved comedian revealed her plans to embrace her new life while commenting on the ongoing struggles within the LGBTQ+ community.

DeGeneres, who moved to the picturesque Cotswolds with her wife Portia de Rossi last November, spoke candidly during an event in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Emphasizing a newfound sense of peace, she expressed, "Life is just better here."

The former talk show host noted that the couple had initially intended to split their time between the US and the UK but decided to stay permanently after feeling disheartened by the political situation at home. "We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, 'He got in'," she explained. This moment led to a decisive shift in their living plans.

In her conversation with broadcaster Richard Bacon, DeGeneres also reflected on her past experiences as an openly gay woman in Hollywood, indicating that significant challenges still exist. She mentioned a recent push from the Southern Baptist Convention to reverse the Supreme Court's same-sex marriage ruling, which highlights ongoing setbacks in the fight for equality.

The 67-year-old humorously recalled the backlash she faced after coming out in the late '90s, admitting it felt like she had been "kicked out of show business twice." She expressed concern that, despite some progress, many in the industry remain fearful of openly identifying as LGBTQ+, sharing, "People are still scared."

Addressing her past controversies surrounding her talk show's alleged toxic workplace culture, DeGeneres characterized herself as "blunt" rather than "mean." Despite the difficult end to her celebrated career, she maintained her empathy and compassion, wishing for a society where everyone could accept differences without fear.

As DeGeneres adjusts to her new rural lifestyle, she has shared glimpses of her experiences farming and enjoying the countryside, painting a picture of a fulfilling life filled with new adventures. While she contemplates future projects, she acknowledged that the entertainment landscape has changed, noting that she may not pursue a similar talk show format again.

Ellen's long-standing influence in the entertainment industry continues to resonate, showcasing her resilience in the face of both personal and professional challenges. As she forges a new path in the UK, her journey reflects ongoing dialogues about societal acceptance and the quest for a more inclusive world.
