South Africans are in mourning after the untimely death of beloved actor Presley Chweneyagae, who passed away at the age of 40. His agency lauded him as a "South African icon," while the government issued a heartfelt tribute on X, celebrating him as a "gifted storyteller" whose talent “lit up our screens and hearts.”

Chweneyagae, born in 1984 in North-West Province, gained international fame with his performance in the acclaimed 2005 film Tsotsi, which brought South Africa its first Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. The film, a gripping portrayal of gang life within a South African township, showcased Chweneyagae's extraordinary talent as the lead character.

In addition to Tsotsi, he played a significant role in the 2013 biopic Long Walk to Freedom, which chronicled the life of Nelson Mandela. Chweneyagae's contributions also extended to the stage, where he delivered powerful performances in various theatre productions.

The South African Film and Television Awards hailed him as a "true legend of South African cinema" and a "powerhouse performer." The Ministry of Sports, Arts and Culture emphasized his impact, referring to him as a trailblazer and a storyteller who embodied the nation’s spirit through his craft. Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a great artist who touched countless lives.
