Smokey Robinson Faces Criminal Investigation Amidst Sexual Assault Allegations

The Motown legend is under scrutiny following a lawsuit from four housekeepers claiming sexual misconduct, while his legal team defends his innocence.

Smokey Robinson is being investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department after four anonymous women accused him of sexual battery and other offenses. Robinson's legal team has refuted the claims, alleging they are a ploy to tarnish his reputation.

Motown icon Smokey Robinson finds himself at the center of a criminal investigation in Los Angeles as the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department examines allegations of sexual assault. The inquiry was confirmed by the department, which noted that it is currently in the "early stages."

The investigation arises after a lawsuit was submitted last week by four anonymous housekeepers against the 85-year-old singer-songwriter. The lawsuit accuses him of various offenses including sexual battery, false imprisonment, negligence, and gender violence. In response to these allegations, Mr. Robinson has categorically denied any wrongdoing.

His attorney, Christopher Frost, contended that the accusations stem from a desire to exploit the musician financially. "We feel confident that a determination will be made that Mr. Robinson did nothing wrong," Frost stated, adding that they believe the claims are intended to sway public opinion and generate media attention.

The sheriff's department has conveyed that its Special Victims Bureau is actively looking into the accusations against William Robinson, also known as Smokey Robinson, without offering further comment at this juncture. The lawsuit was filed on May 6 in Los Angeles Superior Court, with the plaintiffs identified by pseudonyms Jane Doe 1, 2, 3, and 4.

In a detailed 27-page document, the women allege multiple instances of misconduct dating back to 2006, claiming Robinson coerced them into sexual encounters. They expressed that they refrained from speaking out until now due to fears of job loss, backlash from family, and concerns about potential repercussions on their immigration status.

The plaintiffs are seeking approximately $50 million (£38 million) in damages and have requested a jury trial. During a recent press conference, their legal representatives characterized Mr. Robinson as a "serial and sick rapist" and called for accountability.

In contrast, Robinson's legal representatives described the press event as a "bizarre" attempt to turn public sentiment against their client. The legal team announced plans to pursue a dismissal of the case.

"As we prepare our legal response, Mr. Robinson will also share his perspective in due course," Frost said, urging the public to reserve judgment until the facts of the case fully emerge. Smokey Robinson, renowned for his contributions to Motown as both a songwriter and artist, boasts a rich legacy including hits such as "My Girl" and "Tracks of My Tears."
