**New Deep-Sea Fish Species Honors "Princess Mononoke" Warrior**

A remarkable deep-sea fish species named after the iconic character San from Studio Ghibli's "Princess Mononoke" due to its distinctive cheek stripes.


This newly discovered species, Branchiostegus sanae, reflects the film's themes of nature and preservation, and was identified by Chinese researchers through genetic analysis.

The ocean depths have revealed a new species of deepwater fish that pays homage to a beloved animated character. This unique fish, Branchiostegus sanae, is named after San, the warrior princess from Hayao Miyazaki's critically acclaimed film "Princess Mononoke." The moniker stems from the fish's distinctive facial markings, which resemble the striking cheek stripes synonymous with the character.

The identification of this new species was achieved by a team of researchers hailing from notable institutions such as the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, the Chinese Academy of Science, Zhejiang University, and Ocean University of China. They utilized genetic analysis to affirm its status as a previously unclassified species, highlighting the importance of thorough scientific inquiry.

San, portrayed as a fierce protector of the forest and raised by wolves, serves as a symbol of the intricate connection between humanity and the environment, a sentiment echoed in the film’s narrative. The lead author of the study, Haochen Huang, remarked on the parallel between the character's mission to protect nature and the spirit of discovery embodied in this new fish identification.

Deepwater tilefish, which includes Branchiostegus sanae, are characterized by their habitat in parts of the ocean that can reach up to 600 meters deep. While they are commonly found in seafood markets across East and Southeast Asia, this particular group of fish boasts relatively low biodiversity; only 31 species within the Branchiostegidae family have been classified to date.

The discovery of Branchiostegus sanae is notable, given that only three new species within the genus have been identified over the past 34 years, underscoring the significance of this find. The newly collected specimens will be preserved in biological collections, contributing to ongoing research and understanding of marine biodiversity.
