An 11-year-old Palestinian boy, who lost his family in an Israeli airstrike, is heading to Italy for medical care.
Adam al-Najjar, the only survivor of a tragic Israeli airstrike that devastated his family, is being flown to Italy for critical medical treatment. This move comes after the brutal strike on his home in Khan Younis, Gaza, on May 23, which resulted in the death of his father, Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar, and his nine siblings. Accompanied by his mother, Dr. Alaa al-Najjar, Adam is set to fly to Milan this evening, according to Italy's foreign ministry.
Dr. Alaa has reported that Adam's injuries are severe; his left arm is fractured with damaged nerves. Prior to their evacuation, Palestinian journalists shared heartfelt footage of the mother and son departing in a Red Crescent ambulance. In addition to them, 17 other injured Palestinians and family members are also making the journey to Italy, with their evacuation facilitated by the Italian Air Force operating chartered flights.
The tragic events unfolded shortly after Dr. Hamdi had dropped off Dr. Alaa at Nasser Hospital, where both parents worked. Following the airstrike, he sustained critical injuries that ultimately led to his death. Adam survived but was left with significant wounds, with an attending British surgeon describing his state as dire, highlighted by severe lacerations and extensive fragment injuries.
In a statement regarding the strike, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) mentioned that they are reviewing the incident, which occurred in a targeted area declared safe for civilians. The internal conflict has seen rampant violence since Hamas's cross-border attacks on October 7, which left around 1,200 Israelis dead. The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with reports indicating over 54,981 casualties due to ongoing military operations.
The evacuation marks a collaboration between humanitarian organizations and state agencies working to provide medical assistance to those affected by the ongoing conflict. Adam's journey to recovery begins in Italy, amidst the widespread grief and loss felt by countless families in the region.
