Pope Leo XIV Urges Global Leaders to Embrace Peace in First Address

In his inaugural Sunday blessing, Pope Leo XIV echoes calls for peace, addressing ongoing global conflicts during a significant day of reflection.

In a heartfelt inaugural address, Pope Leo XIV embraced his new role by urging an end to warfare and advocating for peace in conflict-stricken areas.

Pope Leo XIV made a powerful call for peace during his first Sunday blessing from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, just days after being elected the leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Speaking to a sea of faithful amassed in St. Peter's Square, he declared, "Never again war," imploring world leaders to act responsibly in light of ongoing global hostilities. He emphasized the tragic legacy of World War II, highlighting its 80-year anniversary and echoing sentiments from his predecessor, Pope Francis, who termed contemporary violence as “a third world war in pieces.”

The new pontiff directed particular attention to the conflict in Ukraine, advocating for an "authentic, just and lasting peace," alongside a commitment to secure the release of prisoners caught in the ongoing strife. He also called for the urgent repatriation of children affected by the war, referencing Ukrainian minors taken to Russia against the wishes of their families.

In addition to Ukraine, Pope Leo expressed deep concern for the situation in Gaza, emphasizing the need for an immediate cease-fire and the facilitation of humanitarian aid for the “exhausted civilian population.” He stressed the importance of securing the release of hostages taken during the Hamas assault on Israel on October 7, 2023.

In his address, Leo included a heartfelt acknowledgment of "all mothers" coinciding with Mother’s Day celebrations in various countries, reminding everyone of the familial bonds that suffering communities endure. He also recognized the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, urging an increase in religious commitment as many countries face a decline in those entering the priesthood and religious life.

Among those eager to hear the pope's message was Candice Dias, a visitor from California, who remarked on Leo's humble demeanor. "He seems to be very down to earth," she expressed, highlighting a desire for the Church to maintain its focus on ordinary people rather than the affluent.

Since his election, Pope Leo XIV has demonstrated a commitment to prioritizing the needs of the marginalized and continuing the inclusive work initiated by Pope Francis. His first Mass with the cardinals on the day following his election affirmed his commitment to aligning the Church with the everyday experiences of its followers.

As preparations ramp up for the re-opening of the Sistine Chapel for public tours, those inspired by the new Pope look forward to witnessing the evolution of the Vatican under his leadership.
